James P. Kelly, MD

James KellyJames P. Kelly, MD, has more than three decades of experience within the field of health care, and has established himself as a passionate, knowledgeable professional throughout the years. Currently, he serves as a director, neurologist and medical doctor for the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE). A Department of Defense institute, the NICoE is committed to studying the gaps in knowledge regarding the pathophysiology, behavior and spiritual damage resulting from comorbid mild traumatic brain injury and pH conditions. Dr. Kelly and his team conduct clinical evaluations, patient- and family-focused interventions, and research for the organization’s members. Noted for his knowledge in the area of traumatic brain injuries, as well as concussions of athletes and military personnel, Dr. Kelly works with the facility’s military members and warriors returning home, as well as athletes suffering from related conditions. Currently, Dr. Kelly is a volunteer faculty member, and formerly worked with the University of Colorado Hospital-Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion.

Dr. Kelly has also served as the director of the brain injury program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He was the neurological consultant for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League, and is consulted frequently by professional, elite amateur and youth athletes who have sustained concussions. Dr. Kelly co-authored the sports concussion guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology and the Standardized Assessment of Concussion, which is now widely used in athletic and military settings.
